Power-to-heat systems from Klöpper-Therm

Power-to-heat (PtH) describes the process of converting electrical energy into heat.  In order to make this sustainable and grid-friendly, the electricity required to generate heat is obtained from renewable sources such as wind or hydropower, photovoltaic systems or large solar power plants.

Power-to-heat is part of the concept of sector coupling, which aims to link different energy sectors such as electricity, heat and transport in order to increase efficiency and maximize the use of renewable energies.

At times when electricity from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power is available in abundance or even in surplus, it should be used directly or stored for later use. Instead of leaving this energy unused or curtailing it, the sustainably generated electricity can be used to heat water or charge other types of heat storage, for example. Various processes can be used to generate electricity from the stored heat later, for example. This way of storing energy helps to reduce CO2 emissions. Compared to other energy storage systems, the use of heat storage systems in conjunction with our PtH systems is very economical.

Depending on the output of a PtH system, it can be used as auxiliary heating or as a direct heat source for heating buildings. They are suitable for heating water in companies or for industrial applications such as steam generation.

Large areas of application for power-to-heat systems are the local and district heating networks of municipal utilities and energy service providers. The systems are also often used in conjunction with combined heat and power plants. This means that the electricity generated in the CHP unit can also be used to generate heat. This provides additional flexibility and revenue potential.

Power-to-heat systems are used by grid operators to compensate for imbalances in the generation and consumption of electrical energy. They are particularly suitable for participation in the balancing energy market or for stabilizing the electricity grid.

PtH systems can also be used as a charging technology for a wide range of heat storage systems.

The advantage: The investment costs for a PtH system from Klöpper-Therm are low compared to fossil-fuelled heating systems.
